PLC Upgrades
A Logical Choice for Vastly Improved Shovel Operation
Digging rock and dirt requires some mighty rugged hardware. But the difference between digging and digging profitably depends increasingly on software. To meet that need, P&H Mining Equipment presents the next generation in Programmable Logic Controls (PLCs).

Programming the PLC is fast and simple. On-screen graphics and prompts are designed to make the process intuitive.

PLC Upgrades take on two forms: converting from relay control to state-of-the-art PLC capability, or modernizing an existing, older-generation PLC to current technology. In either case, more direct control of more functions on the shovel are incorporated into the PLC and its program, yielding superior intelligence for the system's control logic.
Resolvers send boom position data to the PLC allowing it to track shovel functions with a degree of accuracy well beyond the reach of relays. The operator's references are directed through the PLC to allow greater control and protection than ever before possible. As a consequence, you can use much more of the shovel's operating envelope safely and productively.
PLCs improve electrical reliability by eliminating massive amounts of wiring and the problems associated with relays, including loose connections, coils and contacts burning up or arcing, and contacts sticking together. MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) is also improved due to the troubleshooting tools made possible by the combination of the PLC logic and the touch screen. The new generation adds more sophistication by simplifying the procedure for setting motion limits and making it possible to modify control parameters to improve digging while maintaining the highest degree of machine protection.
Touch Screen Simplicity
With the PLC's graphical user interface (GUI), setting control parameters is quick and easy. The frequency and timing of all lubrication functions can be set in about one minute thanks to the on-screen programming on the included touch screen display . Boom profiling and limits can be set in about the same time.
Not only does this simplicity speed set-up times, it facilitates maintenance and makes a substantial improvement in machine uptime.
Beyond its immediate benefits, P&H PLC upgrades introduce an entirely new platform for options. Because the PLC is software driven and offers expanded memory, the technology is extremely robust. New functionality can be added with software upgrades and a minimal amount of wiring. Here are some of the capabilities available:
